Joey Antico Trio

If drums could sing, Joey Antico is the voice. As a bandleader, he takes his listeners on a melodic, percussive and nuanced trail through jazz compositions and tried and true standards. Joey’s talent is in line with his mentors, such as the Washington Area’s Chuck Redd and his influences such as Mel Lewis, Brian Blade and Jeff Hamilton among others.

Joey Antico’s Jazz Composite performs as a trio, quartet or quintet. The band trio brings together piano/guitar, bass and Joey’s drumming. Add a horn for the quartet and a vocalist for the full quintet. As bandleader, Joey enjoys the freedom to collaborate around original compositions as well as unforgettable jazz standards and new music. Joey’s melodic approach to percussion paired with his uncompromising skills as an ensemble leader create a sound that, like jazz, is fluid and new every time.

FLIP THE SCRIPT: MAKING MELODY WITH DRUMS ... an interactive workshop

Drums are often perceived as purely rhythmic, though their melodic potential can be more than initially meets the ear. Antico draws on the roots of keeping time and playing in an ensemble to reveal the multitude of ways that drums create melodies. You will reference examples that illustrate the melodic possibilities of the drum set and apply your own creative ideas, gain constructive insight, and incorporate these elements into your music making.
